This training provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. This blended learning class includes online training with in-person practical skills, scenario drills, and Red Cross CPR/First Aid for the professional rescuer. 

 

Participants must be 16 years old by first day of session.  

 

Prerequisites: Complete 6-hour blended learning videos through Red Cross online prior to arrival. Prerequisite test includes - Swim 100 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 50 seconds by starting in the water swim 20 yards Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a10-pound object Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and exit the water without using steps or a ladder.

 

Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Shallow Water Lifeguarding (less than 5 feet)/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years. Participants may also lifeguard in the Camp McCormick Indoor Pool only. To lifeguard in the Camp Dean pool (7 feet depth), Camp McCormick outdoor pool (9 feet depth), or other deeper pools, participants will need to follow up with American Red Cross Lifeguarding up to 13 feet certification and training. 

 

This class will include classroom and in-water training at Camp McCormick's indoor pool. Participants will need to provide their own lunch and snacks, swimsuits, and towels. Participants will be provided a digital Shallow Water Lifeguard Manual or can purchase a print version from Red Cross. 

 

Participants will learn the ins and outs of facilitating and lifeguarding at Camp McCormick's Indoor Pool for facilitation opportunities. 

 

Participants will not be refunded if unable to complete and pass certification. 

 

While youth participants receive certifications from the American Red Cross for lifeguarding, rules and procedures from the Girl Scouts of the USA require at least 1 adult over the age of 18 who is certified in the activity to be present for facilitation and activity rental. Girl Scout Ambassadors are welcome to work with adult facilitators to lead lessons and instruct younger youth participants, but the certified adult must be present. Girl Scout Ambassadors can also aid their troops, service unit, or camporees by providing a second facilitator support.
