Congratulations to GSNI’s AmeriCorps team for planning a meaningful program around Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Beloved Community theme!
Prior to the event, members met to decide on ideas, platform, and logistics. They researched and planned videos, online activities, and questions to discuss. The group decided on a three-workshop virtual event open to the public through Volunteer Fox Valley events, GSNI social media, and direct email to current AmeriCorps-served troops. The event was designed to serve youth in grades K–6 and led by AmeriCorps members who facilitate Girl Scout troops throughout GSNI.
Our AmeriCorps team grew their skill set through virtual presentations, troubleshooting technical difficulties, carrying a discussion, leading questions, and engaging youth to optimize the impact of discussion. Members felt the overall activity was successful and learned from the participating youth, as well. "They had really good insights,” remarked one AmeriCorps member.
After the presentation, the AmeriCorps members agreed they’d like to do this event again and even perhaps implement this type of event bi-monthly or quarterly. They believe this would positively impact all youth served and give GSNI’s AmeriCorps members more opportunities to work as a team!
AmeriCorps leaders remove barriers Girl Scouts might face to full participation in the Girl Scout program. They also receive compensation and an education award while providing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to those who might not otherwise have access. Our AmeriCorps opportunity is open to interested community members, current volunteers, recent graduates, those looking to re-enter the workforce, and semi-retired persons.
