Nothing Stops Votes for Women!

News

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, GSNI was forced—along with numerous youth-serving non-profits nationwide—to cancel many of our scheduled programs to rightly protect the health and safety of our members.

One of the programs—Votes for Women!—had been in the making for over 100 years! It was designed to educate girls on the historical and ongoing importance of the 19th Amendment on its 100th Anniversary in 2020. The 19th Amendment granted a population of women the right to vote!

While the 19th Amendment removed gender restriction to voting, it did not guarantee all women could vote. Although a milestone, voting rights were applied unevenly and restricted for many. Not until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were many women of color able to register and finally cast their votes. Given the importance of gender equality and the need for a deeper look at history, we believe sharing information about this landmark achievement is critical!

As an organization with over a 100-year history ourselves, we could not give up on Votes for Women! Instead, we moved the event online to outstanding success! Girls from all over the country and even overseas attended our Votes for Women! events in June 2020.

We are excited to be able to share a version of that program and resources with you here! This program helps girls learn about the long fight for the right to vote and about the importance of voting—then and now!
