Programs-in-a-Box Checkout Procedures:

 

Reservations are required for all Programs-in-a-Box. To reserve a box, contact the following staff:

  • Elgin Service Center—Emily Hall, Ext. 7132
  • Freeport Service Center—Council Shop, Ext. 7158
  • Rockford Service Center—Council Shop, Ext. 7165
  • Sugar Grove Service Center—Council Shop, Ext. 7200
  • Rock Falls Service Center—Council Shop, Ext. 7300 

 

Schedule your pick-up a minimum of two weeks ahead of time to ensure your box is ready.

 

At pick-up, you will be required to pay a deposit and, where required, the per-girl fee.

 

NOTE: These two fees must be paid separately. The girl fee is due at pick-up and the deposit will be held until the box is returned.

 

Deposits are returned in full if all items are returned in good condition and ON TIME. If items are missing or damaged, additional damage/loss fee will assessed. The late fee is charged at $1 per weekday.

 

NOTE: If you know you will be late, please contact the appropriate check-out person. If the box is not reserved by someone else, an extension may be available.

 

Schedule your return time—when you return, be sure to give yourself time to allow staff to verify that all items are included and in good condition. If you do not allow time, your deposit will be sent to you at a later date.

 

If using a Program-in-a-Box for a large group, service unit event or camp, please contact the appropriate reservation staff member at least six weeks in advance to check the availability of additional boxes and supplies. All deposits and fees are applicable.

How is a rainbow formed? What colors are all colors made of? Which colors show up best in the dark? Did you know colors have meaning? "Dye"ing for answers? Check out these activities to satifsy your curiosity about color. (Serves approx. 15 girls)

Under Construction Pick-upIt's Electric DA, BR, JR $25 deposit  
Which is stronger—a square, triangle or an arch? Once you decide, put it to the test as you build a two-story building and compete to see which building is the strongest. Try your hand at building a cardboard suspension bridge that won't collapse under the weight of a pile of books. Then try to construct a Roman Arch and a Catenary Arch using the blocks supplies. (serves approx. 15 girls)

It's Electric Pick-up DA, BR, JR, CD, SR, AM $50 deposit for a set of 6  
Learn about electrical circuits using the Snap Circuits™ sets to build working circuits such as a musical doorbell, an alarm circuit, a motion detector and circuits that react to the sound of your voice. Includes directions to build over 300 projects. Each kit requires 4 "AA" batteries—not included. It's Electric will be available October - January at the Elgin and Freeport Service Centers and February - May at the Rockford and Sugar Grove Service Centers.

Think Green Pick-up BR, JR, CD, SR, AM $50 deposit for a set of 6 It's Your Planet—Love It!
Learn about the different types of energy and their forms. Experiment with green energy by using wind, water, sun and your own energy to create "electricity" to power lights, sirens, fans and more. Includes directions to build over 120 projects. Think Green will be available October - January at the Rockford and Sugar Grove Service Centers and February - May at the Elgin and Freeport Service Centers.

You Can Do the Rubik's Cube Pick-up BR, JR, CD, SR, AM $50 deposit for kit including 12 full-size Rubik's Cubes  
This kit comes with everything you need to teach your group how to solve the Rubik's Cube—the solution guide, teaching tips, check list, activity sheet (master) and information on how to download certificates for the girls who solved the cube.
         
Be a Friend, Not a Bully Both BR $15 deposit for DVD and facilitator guide Brownie Quest, A World of Girls, Agent of Change
Sometimes it can be hard to stand kup for what you believe in or say what you really think, especially when there are bullies around. American Girl Chrissa Maxwell knows how hard it can be to stand up to bullies and do what you know is right. So let's get together for this girls-only event and learn how to stand strong. You'll get tips on how to stand up for what you believe in, help yourself or other girls who are being bullied, and make lots of new friends. You'll also get to see how Chrissa deals with the "Mean Bees" at her new school in the movie "An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong." Afterwards you'll get to tak the SHINE pledge and make some cool accessories to show you won't stand for bullying. NOTE: If providing your own DVD there is no charge; materials can be printed by clicking on the program link above.

Intergalactic Bracelet Race Pick-up BR, JR $15 deposit for the game and facilitator guide, plus $2 per girl for supplies A World of Girls
Get ready for a space race to friendship! Visit planets like Dinoslurp where girls will learn what it means to be a good friend, how to share feelings and show respect, handle bullying situations, and conflict resolution. As they're traveling the universe, girls meet space creatures like Flifter, Dop and Inkeroo and answer questions about friendship. Earn the F-R-I-E-N-D beads to create a special bracelet and reminder to always be a good friend.

The uniquely ME! Program includes a variety of activities about recognizing one's strengths and best attributes, handling peer pressure, healthy eating habits, hygiene, general wellness, exercise, and identifying core values and personal interests. Additional information about eating disorders, the power of positive thinking, relationships, and stress is also available to girls on an age-appropriate basis. Each level contains a step-by-step facilitator guide as well as corresponding downloadable activities.

Get moving Bollywood style! Join Cheetah Girls star Sabrina Bryan as she guides you to dance your way to fun in a hip-hop meets Bollywood dance party. Learn about the Indian culture as you make your own Rangolis, a good luck red ribbon and a Bollywood-style bracelet to wear while you dance. With this program, you'll have the opportunity to thumb through each book and see the themes and activities in each series; and get a better understanding of the importance of the Adult Guide in helping you plan your sessions.

It's Your Planet—Love It!
Learn about green design and in the process, develop science and engineering skills. Girls will construct a green studio from start to finish—from brainstorming an idea, to creating a floor plan, to building "green." Through smaller activities, girls will explore and reflect on their energy usage in their homes and consider ways in which they can change their habits to lessen their environmental impact. This Program-in-a-Box can be completed in approximately five (5) 1.5 hour sessions. ADULTS MUST HAVE TRAINING BEFORE RESERVING THE BOX.

Power It Up

Learn about electricity and circuitry through a series of hands-on investigations. Girls will explore Snap Circuits™, learn about basic electronic components and build different kinds of circuits. Rounding out this unit, girls will learn how to solder and put their skills to action by making an electric game board and tilt lantern. This Program-in-a-Box can be completed in approximately five (5) 1.5 hour sessions. ADULTS MUST HAVE TRAINING BEFORE RESERVING THE BOX.

Girls will learn about the engineering design process and get their creative juices flowing by building and designing a pencil pouch for their buddy and a unique bubble wand and solution. Girls will also build protective packaging for their favorite cookie and a toy prototype. This Program-in-a-Box can be completed in approximately four (4) 1.5 hour sessions. ADULTS MUST HAVE TRAINING BEFORE RESERVING THE BOX.

Engineers to the Rescue!

Survival skills meet science as girls design water filters, wind-powered cranks, a message-carrying car, and a safe shelter for their troop at their (make believe) camping trip in Yellowstone National Park. After an earthquake strikes the girls' fictional campground, the electrical power, food and water sources are lost! How will the troop survive? This Program-in-a-Box can be completed in approximately four (4) 1.5 hour sessions. ADULTS MUST HAVE TRAINING BEFORE RESERVING THE BOX.

Explore simple machines all around us as the girls build a merry-go-round, a bean-bag toss, and a coaster car. Levers, pulleys, screws and gears abound as girls engineer the perfect playground. This Program-in-a-Box can be completed in approximately five (5) 1.5 hour sessions. ADULTS MUST HAVE TRAINING BEFORE RESERVING THE BOX.
