2013 Young Women of Distinction

Families, friends, and community members gathered on Sunday, June 9, to celebrate GSNI’s Young Women of Distinction! Over 160 people were present as ten Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, along with nine scholarship recipients, were honored for their achievements. Attendees could view displays of the girls’ Gold Award Projects and watch videos of the girls discussing their projects and the positive impact Girl Scouting has had on their lives.
Before the event, girls met with YWD keynote speaker Kristin Bien. Bien is the Saturday morning anchor and morning reporter at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana. She is also a past Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, earning her award in 2001. The girls loved hearing how the Gold Award has evolved over time, even since Bien received her award. For the program, Bien spoke about her career, highlighting the stories she most enjoys are ones showcasing people making a difference in their community. She shared this was something she especially learned to value as a Girl Scout.
Other speakers included GSNI Board Chair, Lisa Normoyle, GSNI CEO, Vicki Wright, and Linda Christiansen, Girl Scout Gold Award Committee Member, who gave an inspiring charge to the girls as they approach the future. Congratulations to each Gold Award and scholarship recipient for truly being GSNI’s Young Women of Distinction!
