If you answered YES, you are invited to get involved with the GSNI Council Historians' Task Group!
A Girl Scout Historians Task Team is being formalized in the spirit of preserving the history of the four legacy councils that merged to form Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois (GSNI). You are invited to apply to serve as a volunteer member for a term of 1 year. One or two people will be appointed as Coordinator(s); all other participants will be appointed as Historians.
The purpose of the task team is to assemble a collection of documents, letters, records, publications, uniforms, insignia, and other memorabilia that represents the rich history and tradition of Girl Scouting in our jurisdiction. In addition to preserving our history, interacting with girls will be an important aspect of this group. The historians will provide assistance to girls working on history badges, patches and service projects, as well as educate the community on the history of Girl Scouting.
The council historians, under the guidance of the council coordinator(s) and staff, will acquire and preserve important Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois artifacts for permanent storage and display. The council historians will be responsible for the care and chronicling of historic Girl Scout documents, materials, and objects contained in the council’s archives collection. While previous archiving experience is not necessary, applicants should possess a desire to preserve, protect, and care for our Girl Scout history. A GSNI staff member will serve as liaison to the group.
Over the years, many Girl Scout volunteers have worked tirelessly to collect, catalogue and maintain historical documents. As we begin to look forward to mark the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in 2012, we must ensure that our legacy councils’ history and the history of Girl Scouts of the USA are preserved for future generations of Girl Scouts. I hope that you will help GSNI preserve our ongoing history as we enter a new era.
