December 2011

Attention Girls and Parents! Let Your Voice Be Heard And Win Some Great Prizes!

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois and Girl Scouts of the USA Research Institute (GSRI) have partnered to provide opportunities for girls and adults to share with us their thoughts and feelings about their experiences in Girl Scouting.

We encourage all girls and adults to visit www.girlscoutvoices.org

Completing this initial registration survey will help us send relevant, age-appropriate surveys in the future. Information provided on these surveys is important to help us understand how to create the best possible program for all Girl Scouts. If your daughter is under 13, parental consent is required.

The first 500 girls who get their parents’ permission and register on GirlScout Voices.org before December 31 will get a participation patch. Then, all girls who complete an online survey in 2012 will be entered in a drawing to win an Apple iPad 2 and other great prizes! REGISTER TODAY!

MEdia Journey Series for Cadettes

Have you ever wondered how much of your life you’re spending in someone else’s reality? When you glance at a billboard, open a magazine, settle in for a movie, or surf the Web, you’re really reading someone else’s story. Using the power of girls, you’ll work together to create your own MEdia message to break stereotypes and tell your story. Go behind the scenes to see how those stories get made, and you’re bound to find some you’ll want to change—to capture the real ME in media! Join together with Girl Scout Cadettes as you work toward completing your MEdia Journey. This is a great opportunity for girls planning to work on their Girl Scout Silver Award to complete the journey prerequisite. Girls are also welcome to invite a non-Girl Scout friend to register for this series as well. For more information, see the Cadette link to the right.

Amaze Journey Series for Cadettes

This series is designed to connect Girl Scout Cadettes and explore the relationships and conquer challenges the girls can encounter while in middle school. Participants will work together to complete the “Amaze” Journey from start to finish. Discover how to deal with a bully, conquer peer pressure, and take action against a social issue. Completing the “Amaze” Journey will also help you meet one of the requirements for the Girl Scout Silver Award. For more information, see the Cadette link to the right.

Girls World Forum

Want to change the world? The Girls’ World Forum (GWF) is the third and final event in a series of forums that are part of the WAGGG’s global centenary celebrations. The World Forums, previously hosted by Girl Guiding UK in 2010 and the World Centers in 2011, have already engaged over 250 young women in discussions of the WAGGGS Global Action Theme, girls worldwide say “Together We Can Change Our World,” which addresses the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The 2012 GWF will take place in Chicago from July 14-16, 2012, and will bring together 250 Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world to take action to help solve issues like poverty, hunger, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. GSNI will be selecting two girl applicants to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime centenary event. Questions? Contact Brooke Radford at bradford@girlscoutsni.org or Ext. 7147. Application deadline is January 4, 2012. Application and more information can be found on our website on the Program Events page.

First Lego Leagues

The 24/7 Builders’ tournament was held in Harvard on December 3 where they competed with 16 other teams. Their robot performed well on the table with their best score ranking them in the middle of the field. The girls showed great enthusiasm and team spirit. Their SWAPS were a hit with the other participants.

On December 10, in Rockford, the Mississippi Pearls competed. One of their highlights was their Challenge Project solution. Their hypothetical idea was a plate that would detect e coli and other harmful bacteria in food within 5-15 seconds after it was placed on the plate.

Wonder Women competed in Lake Zurich on December 10 where they won the Robot Design and Rookie Team Awards. Their robot performed well on the table landing them in second place. The Wonder Women were also chosen to compete on the State level January 20-21, 2012, in Arlington Heights—details to follow.

Our two Junior FIRST Lego League Teams, Lego My Brownie and Lil’ Miss Lego, will have their expo April 21, 2012, in DesPlaines—details to follow.

For more information on GSNI’s robotic teams, please contact Pam Schnecke at pschnecke@girlscoutsni.org.
