Today, GSNI Alumnae Alexandra Fleig, writes about her experience at the Girl Leadership Institute (GSLI) two years ago.
Two years ago I had the opportunity to attend the Girl Scout Leader Institute, GSLI, in Houston, Texas that was part of the Girl Scout National Convention. I went with a great group of girls and chaperones that met before the event to get to know each other, to work on our take action project for GSLI, to make S.W.A.P.S., and to get information about how to choose the activities we would be doing while at GSLI and other information about it. Before we left we ranked activities for every day that sparked our interest and when we got to Houston we got a schedule with the activities we got. My favorite session was one where we learned about astronauts and did tests like they would go through before they could go into space. It was really fun!! On top of all the sessions we got to participate in, there were speakers that came in and talked to us as whole, the speakers were very inspirational.
Then at night we would either go to part of the delegation meetings, where we heard from more speakers, but there were also musical guests. Sara Bareilles came and sang for us as well as a girl group from the UK or we had a GSLI event where all the girls that were a part of GSLI would get together and do something together. One night we had a party where they gave us food and desert and the band Mindless Behavior performed for us.
GSLI is a great experience where you get to meet other Girl Scouts from around the United States as well as Girl Guides from different places around the world. If I could go again I would in a heartbeat! You get to learn new things, have special guests like Sara Bareilles, meet new girls, and you get to travel.
