Program Specialist – STEM, Leadership Awards
Elgin Service Center
My position focuses on specific parts of Girl Scout program delivery – The Girl Scout Leadership Awards (Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities. While working on Girl Scout Leadership Awards, I assist the volunteer Gold Award Committee and provide support to girls and volunteers as they work toward the highest awards in Girl Scouting. When my focus shifts to STEM, I work with volunteers and community partners to bring STEM programming to girls.
The most commonly asked question I receive is, “Girl Scouts offers STEM programs?” I am happy to tell them all that we offer! This is personal to me, because one of the projects I worked on in my first “real” job was the development of the ColecoVision gaming control!
Working with STEM allows me to explore all the neat STEM “toys”, such as LEGO robotic kits, snap circuits, rockets, and Techbridge kits! I really enjoy providing girls with opportunities they may not ordinarily get to experience. One of the reasons I am so passionate about offering STEM programs to girls is because when I was in high school, I was prohibited from taking a drafting course due to my gender. I love seeing girls get excited about science and engineering!
I also enjoy supporting girls as they work on their Gold Award projects. We are getting ready to celebrate the 2013 recipients of the Gold Award at this year’s Young Women of Distinction event. Earning the Gold Award is a great achievement that requires a lot of work! For more information about this event, please check out our website!
